Guarding the Heart, Guiding the Tongue

Published on 31 August 2025 at 03:27

Today I want to share with you something the Lord has impressed upon my spirit. Let us go straight to the Word:

Matthew 12:34 (NIV)

"You brood of vipers, how can you who are evil say anything good? For out of the overflow of the heart the mouth speaks."

Luke 6:45 (NIV)

"A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of."

The Spirit of God reveals something powerful in these verses: our words are not random. They are the fruit of what lives within us. The tongue simply gives voice to the condition of the heart.

What This Means Spiritually

• Your words are spiritual indicators. They reveal whether your inner life is aligned with God or influenced by the world. When your heart is saturated with bitterness, anger, or fear, it will spill out through your speech. But when your heart is filled with God’s truth, peace, and love, your words will carry life.

• Environment matters. If you continually walk with the toxic, you will eventually speak and live like them. That is why the Scriptures remind us: “Do not be misled: Bad company corrupts good character” (1 Corinthians 15:33).

• Conflict reveals the heart. When disagreements arise, listen carefully. The words spoken in moments of tension often reveal the deeper state of a person’s heart more than their words in times of peace.

• Cultivation of the heart is key. We cannot simply try to "fix our words." We must allow God to purify our hearts. When Christ dwells richly in us, our mouths will naturally speak grace, encouragement, and truth.

Reflection

Beloved, this is why prayer, worship, and the Word are so essential. They are not just spiritual disciplines—they are heart-shapers. They fill us with what is good so that what flows out of us glorifies God. Ask yourself today: What is my heart full of? Because whatever fills your heart will surely shape your words.
